Genealogy Resources

Our genealogy collection is housed in the Ohio Room, which is located on the Library’s main floor. All materials in the Ohio Room are for reference only and do not circulate, but photocopiers and microfilm reader/printers are available for your use. The Ohio Room is open to the public during regular library hours.
The Ohio Room is the local repository for much of the county’s historical material. The collection includes Marion County histories, city directories, biographical sketches of early residents, family histories compiled by local historians, cemetery inscriptions, plat maps, vital records, censuses, local newspapers, high school yearbooks, and books on our most famous political personalities – Warren G. Harding and Norman Thomas.
However, the Ohio Room is not purely local in scope. The collection houses histories and genealogy publications for most of Ohio’s counties, various U.S. and Ohio census indexes, and information from other states along the migration routes of early Marion County settlers. Online databases and the Internet provide access to information worldwide.
The Library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest Online and New England Ancestors (Main Branch Access Only). These Internet services may be accessed from any public Internet workstation in the main and branch libraries. They can also be accessed through our wireless connection the main library. Heritage Quest Online may be accessed from home. You can find links for these resources on our main Genealogy [2] page.

The library houses the following Marion County records on microfilm:

Birth and death records 1867-1908
